Problems with the latest Apple TV 2.2 Update?

I seen a few posts on this, notably this one from BindApple, that people are having problems with the latest update. Wondering if this is the case for our readers? Leave a comment if you have had problems or success. I currently have auto updates disabled. I have heard that the latest XMBC and Boxee hacks do work with the 2.2 update. Stay tuned - I plan to try out the Boxee install.

I’ve had no problems with the update. I had XBMC installed, but it caused my atv to crash, causing me to factory restore. It cause my remote to no longer function with the atv. This happened after the screensaving “dimming” feature that is built into XBMC, happened in XBMC. I have yet to reinstall XBMC, since I heard the remote functions aren’t quite right with the new update.

Also, I don’t know if this feature existed before the 2.2 update, but now while watching a YouTube video, if the up button is pressed twice on the apple remote, a summary of the video is displayed.

I’ve had multiple restarts of the atv since the update. If I play music for more than an hour, the atv will reboot. I can’t get through an entire movie anymore without the atv restarting. When selecting the run diagnostics option, it comes back with nothing wrong and reboots. Since mine isn’t a year old yet, I’ll probably be taking it back for a replacement at the Apple store.

I have four Apple TV’s all updated and functioning just fine at version 2.2. Of course, every so often do I still see the odd issue that’s resolved by a restart (i.e., white screen on playing a rented movie, and other odd iTunes Store related issues, like difficulties accessing the store for purchases). Of course, although I do have a couple of Vista and XP iTunes installs, I just don’t use them often. So, I’ve not seen the BSOD raised by Apple TV and/or iTunes 8 activities.

I’ve had all kinds of issues with network connectivity. It drops fails to sync reliably and often can’t see my iTunes library. Everything was fine before 2.2 (as in I had never had any issues) and it’s a totally standard AppleTV never been molested…

I must say I’m having a lot less problems with the update, than before the update.

My Apple TV keeps turning on by itself. Cannot turn off with the remote by pressing play for 5 seconds anymore. Must go to settings and select stand bye. Very annoying.

That’s a feature, not a bug. If you notice, now, when you press and hold Play during a song, it brings up a contextual menu, so they shifted some of the functionality around.

On my end, I had Boxee installed, then upgraded without any problems. I just had to reinstall Boxee and I was back in business. No problems here!

No problems whatsoever for me. It works great, and I love the new little functions.

However, I have to take issue with what Apple claims on its Web site:

Once you find a podcast, watch or listen to it immediately, save it for later, or subscribe to get the most recent episode — and all future episodes — delivered directly to your Apple TV.

Unless I’m completely mad, I don’t think there’s any way to subscribe to podcasts and have all new episodes delivered directly to my Apple TV. Unless, of course, by subscribing Apple means adding to Favorites. And by “get the most recent episode — and all future episodes — delivered directly to your Apple TV,” Apple means that you have to manually go check for new episodes and manually download each new episode individually.

Read so many horror stories on the Apple support Apple TV discussion pages I’ve decided not to upgrade mine.

Upgraded as soon as it came out. Works great, no problems here. The way HD TV shows work now is perfect. Can’t wait to be able to buy HD movies (when the powers that be let me. I also love that pressing up during playback shows a sexy information panel about it with the album art. If your playing a bought/ rental movie or have tagged your own well, the chaapter selection screen looks great too.

I also saw how in the new Apple TV info on Apples page they mention some movies come with directors commentaries. That’s pretty cool and wasn’t there before.

Not a single problem since i updated..

Works just fine !

@ George:

Regarding the “turn off Apple TV when you hold the play/pause button”… it still works for me. Just make sure you are on the main menu and press and hold the play/pause button until the Apple TV turns itself off. Key here is being on the main menu. It won’t do it in any of the submenus or movie/music/podcast/tv shows browsing menus.

Oh, and my Apple TV is working wonderfully so far.

1. If you’re like me - using a Harmony Universal remote to switch your system - you lose the AppleTV screen switching back to [in my case a DirecTV HD-DVR] your usual TV source. Used to rely on seeing the wee light go dark after holding down the pause button for several seconds.

Have no idea what screen may be in play; but, trial and error proves that if the usual procedure isn’t taking, I just hit the Back button beneath the play/pause button > then do the pause trick and the critter shuts down.

2. What does drive me nuts is losing the 10-second jump. Till this upgrade, I could hit pause, then use forward or backward for 10-second jumps - a great way to escape commercials.

No more. Back to the old-style jump to edit points in the video which often are 30 seconds; but, can be long enough to skip whole segments of whatever I’m watching.

The strange part is - watching exactly the same videos on the latest version of Front Row on my iMac - the 10-second jump still works.
