Nothing New for Apple TV Today
I just finished “watching” the live feed from Apple’s press event at 10 AM PST (thanks to Macworld and Engagdet). No announcements about the Apple TV nor associated content. In addition, no mention of Blu-Ray support in any of their products yet. In fact, in the Q&A session following the event, Apple exec.’s mentioned the licensing of Blu-Ray was a “Bag of Hurt”.
The whole rumor about a new “brick” was likely a result of the new Macbook and Macbook Pro machining process for the aluminum case. It’s good for news for laptop customers but nothing new for us Apple TV fans. Next time (Macworld?).
PS: Kudos to Macworld and Engagdet for excellent live coverage despite the fact they can’t broadcast audio or video from these events.

Wait a minute, there was no AppleTV announcement at the notebook event. Shocking, absolutely shocking.
…And here’s the unabridged quote, for all us purists:
Steve Jobs:
“Blu-ray is a bag of hurt. I don’t mean from the consumer point of view. It’s great to watch movies, but the licensing is so complex. We’re waiting until things settle down, and waiting until Blu-ray takes off before we burden our customers with the cost of licensing.”
@CHASH - you are correct, sir. It is a bag not a world. Not as much hurt as I reported :-). Curious comment from Steve because licensing technology from Apple can hurt too…
@Andrew - that was the point. There were a lot of rumors about a new TV and a new “brick”. Rumors dispelled, for now.
Honestly blue ray is just too new for Apple to jump on the bandwagon. With their own HD download service, I don’t see them really going at it with gusto - rather belatedly adding the drives when it reaches market saturation.
The laptops are slick though, not sure I get the multi-touch track pad with no buttons, but i guess they’re ‘iPhoning’ everything. Here’s hoping that the increased use of touch screen/iPhone input means better integration with the Apple TV. I’m still looking for apps to migrate onto Apple TV with the iPhone/touch as the input device. I Think it could work quite well.

If your gonna quote, then you’ve gotta quote… (bag, bag, bag)
Steve Jobs:
“Blu-ray is just a bag of hurt. It’s great to watch the movies, but the licensing of the tech is so complex, we’re waiting till things settle down and Blu-ray takes off in the marketplace.”
