New Poll - Are On-Disc Digital Copies Enough Incentive To Purchase A DVD?
As I was writing my post about the Wall-E and Incredible Hulk DVD release dates, and mentioned the fact that each would come with a Digital Copy, I began to wonder if anyone is even using these Digital Copy versions? I would imagine a Digital Copy would be convenient for watching on an iPhone or iPod. But, do you see a Digital Copy as enough of an incentive that you’ll buy the DVD when otherwise you wouldn’t have or is it just convenient bonus material? I love the idea of a “digital copy”, but just like audio files, you are limited to whatever bitrate and codec they are using. I believe these are only 1500Kbps, which will look fine on a iPod, but not so great on an HDTV.
I have not yet purchased a movie with a digital copy so I don’t know what the quality is like. If what Galley said above is true then I don.t see it as much of a value add unless(until?) they make the copy at least close to DVD quality. I don’t use my iPhone to play movies.
That being said I don’t purchase many new movies anymore anyway. Between Netflix and the occasional AppleTV rental my movie watching needs are met.
I have a few movies with digital copy; Juno, and Family Guy Blue Harvest. First the copy was not the reason I bought the movie it was just an added bonus. Like Galley said they look fine on an iPod, and great on my iPhone, but when I have viewed them on my Atv the quality is well below DVD. I get better results with DVD43 and Handbrake (PC) and some time encoding. The MPAA needs to wake up and see that digital is wave and allow ripping from DVDs. I would love to pop in a new DVD and rip it to iTunes and just put it away. You know the same thing I do with CDs that I buy legally.
No they are not enough. Why would anyone care about a digital copy? It takes me about 20 mins to make a digital copy of a dvd i buy to throw on my apple tv. It’s more of a convenience thing these days.
Most of the time I just buy my movies from iTMS rather than buying the actual DVD which would just get tossed around by people and scratched beyond the ability to play the dvd.
