Is Apple TV getting replaced?
TUAW is reporting a rumor that, Apple, has sent retailers an E-mail telling them to take down all Apple TV displays. With a note saying there will be a webcast kick off on September 30th. There has also been a rumor about the “brick“, a possible new Apple product. Could all of this be a run up to a Apple TV/Mac Mini hybrid? I hope so, stay tuned for more.

So… anyone want to buy my ATV now that it’s obsolete?! I hate that it’s being squeezed out without ever being fully optimized. I feel like this was Apple’s pet project that was/is in a Google-esque perpetual beta state.
I’m pretty sure this rumor has already been busted, but I’m really hoping we at least see a software update to allow HD purchases, and easier HD streaming of iTunes content.
Even if it is replaced, it will still work. I’ll just move it from the living room to the bedroom and upgrade the living room to the new product.
Following upgrade? Bedroom–>Guest room; Living room –>Bedroom again. Though I was planning to retire my iMac to the Guest room w/ front row once it reached the end of it’s useful life.
Anyway, I’m not worried.
THIS IS ALL STUPID…THEY ARE NOT GETTING RID OF THE TV
IM SURE THE BRICK HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THE TV
EVERYONE IS JUST GETTING FREAKED OUT OVER NOTHING…ITS ADVERTISING MATERIALS THAT ARE BEING PULLED FROM THE SHELVES…ARE YOU KIDDING ME?
GET A GRIP…DONT YOU ACTUALLY THINK THAT ALL THAT COPY WRITE MATERIALS THAT ARE ON THOSE ADVERTISEMENTS HAVE TO EXPIRE AT SOME POINT…AND IM SURE APPLE DOESNT WANT TO CONTINUE TO PAY FOR THE USAGE OF STUFF THAT IS OUT OF DATE…EVERY TIME YOU USE A MOVIE POSTER OR CD COVER OR SONG IN ADVERTISING OR WHAT EVER YOU HAVE TO PAY FOR ITS USAGE…THEY DONT JUST LET YOU PUT THEIR COPY WRITES JUST ANYWHERE YOU PLEASE…
ITS ALL ABOUT ADVERTISING…AND THE FACT IS…THEY ARE PROB NOT GOING TO RUSH OUT NEW ADVERTISING FOR A PLATFORM THAT IS NOT REALLY MAKING THEM MUCH MONEY…IPHONE/IPOD TOUCH ARE THE GRAVY AND SO IS IMAC AND MACBOOK/PRO
NOTHING ELSE IS CAUSING THEM TO RISE IN THE ELECTRONICS WORLD
DONT GET ME WRONG I HAVE 2 TV’S AND A PLETHORA OF MACS IN MY POSSESSION LET ALONE ALL THE OTHER GEAR I OWN…I LOVE MY TV’S
ADORE THEM…RIP AND CONVERT STUFF ALL THE TIME FOR THEM
EDIT TV MOVIES AND SHOWS TO REMOVE COMMERCIALS AND CONVERT WITH EYETV ALL THE TIME…WHAT I WOULD LOVE IT TO CONNECT MY EYETV’S TO THE TV AND DVR LOVE WOULD HAPPEN…BUT UNTIL THEN I WILL REMAIN LOYAL TO MY BABIES…
AND EXCUSE THE CAPS BUT I ALWAYS USE THEM…NOT YELLING HERE…JUST BEING STRONG AND OPINIONATED BESIDES MY EYES ARE BAD AT TIMES…PLUS I HAND WRITE IN ALL CAPS TOO…SO HOPE I DIDNT OFFEND THOSE OF YOU THAT LIVE BY THE CAPS IS THE DEVIL MENTALITY…LOL
PEACE TV LOVERS EVERYWHERE
If they’re pulling advertising material but not actual product, my theory would maybe be a major software update ( 3.0 ? ), so they want the new advertising to recognize new features? Beyond the ability to purchase HD TV shows, I really want grid view and Genius, just like in iTunes.
Or, even bigger, an architecture for apps on the Apple TV!!! Can you imagine the possibilities? Internet radio, RSS aggregators, etc, etc …
i, for one, understood the email as an instruction to pull out collateral materials, not apple tv stock per se.
but if apple were to introduce a new device, i wouldn’t mind a dual-boot mac that can boot either as a mac mini or an apple tv, but shares a common “media drive”. a blu-ray/apple tv combo would be nice, but may be a bit of a stretch.
but, no, i wouldn’t want a computing experience to replace the simple entertainment experience of my apple tv. keep it simple, steve.
It would seem that the instructions to pull out all current promotional material along with ‘webcast due that day’ all point to new software (take 3?) that the new promotional material and online videos would show off. Here’s hoping they announce HD movies to purchase on the same day. *gets ready to order Iron Man*

I also posted this in the comments over at TUAW. I can say one thing is for sure, even if the Apple TV is going away, it’s going to be replaced with something else that can play HD content. Why would Apple they keep dumping titles into the their catalog of HD rentals if the only product which can play this content was going away??
