Interesting Thing I Saw At My Neighborhood Apple Store

I know I always get flack when I criticize Apple in any kind of way and I am sure the same will happen for posting about this. But, I happen to be visiting my local San Diego Apple Store, at UTC specifically, and I couldn’t help by walk by the Apple TV display. To tell you the truth it’s not even on half the time I visit the store.

This particular time I thought I would check out what movies were available to test view. Really I wanted to see one of the new purchase titles as I have not purchased one. I think through habit I first scrolled up to the Movie Rentals listing, and what movies do I find listed as rentals? Transformers in HD, POTC: At Worlds End in HD, The Italian Job in HD and Ratatouille all though not marked as HD.

Now some people might say this would be false advertising? And I know I might be a little peeved if I purchased the box and got home and not one of those movies were available in HD or to rent at all for that matter. Am I wrong in thinking that at the very least this seems disingenuous on Apple’s part. What do you think?

Yep, pretty redonculous. It’s just Apple doing the dance with the movie industry. The industry has been dancing for 100 years, and Apple’s been trying to “cut in” for a mere couple of years. It’s a fine line they’re having to walk.

I know that at least Transformers and Ratatouille were once available for HD rental.

I wish there was a list of HD rentals that were available, but now missing.

I think the software on the instore AppleTV’s run a special version of the software. This was true before 2.0. That’s why it lists them, they were available when the instore promo software was released. Unfortunately the movie studios have since pulled those titles (they are currently HBO/Showtime exclusives - Ive seen this happen on several titles before I got rid oh HBO). Apple should just use the basic version instead of an instore OS so that the movie studios don’t screw up there promo software.

@ jamus - I have often thought of adding a list of recently released movies. This may be something which will come in the future.

As far as titles that come and go @freestate has the right idea. As the new release titles get closer to being released on cable channels such as HBO you will begin to notice them disappear. I believe this is what happened to 300, and as @freestate said its happened to Transformers. I would love to know at one point this exclusivity runs out?

Agree with freestate. It’s the same “special” software that they used for the demo units at MacWorld in SF.

@kbush13 - At the very least it’s a version of that “Special Software” and I say that because I could still walk through the rest of the interface and it was the current version of the software with all of the current movies listed available for rent or purchase. The only thing different were the “Rented Movies” showing movies which were no longer available to rent.
