Apple TV is Hot!

Got your attention :-). Following up on a recent comment about the possibility of running music visualizerson the Apple TV, the issue of heat build up came up. The Apple TV runs really hot as you’ve probably noticed. I thought I’d post a note here about a really interesting article at Digital Trends showing infra-red pictures of the Apple TV running full tilt and in so-called “standby” mode. Apple seems to have a real talent for packaging fairly powerful devices without fans (without obvious passive cooling either) but you have to wonder if this has any long term effect? I also would like to see better power management in a future device, surely running this hot in standby is not green.

You guys are right! It’s so quiet that you can’t hear that fan at all. I can hear the hard drive now and then. The air flow must go in and out of the bottom rim? When you look at this tear down and consider you can get a refurb 40 GB model for ~$200 - you get a lot for your money.

FYI, AppleTV does have active cooling (a micro fan) for the CPU…
