Announcing HD TV Shows On Apple TV…..A Few Weeks Late

Now, I may have been the last person on earth to receive this email from Apple promoting HD TV Shows on the Apple TV, but better late then never I suppose.

One thing that struck me a few weeks back when Apple released the 2.2 update was the lack of press for the new features it brought. I have to admit that after a few years or “hobby” talk regarding the Apple TV, I’ve come to not expect much in the way of Apple TV promotions. But, now that SeƱor Jobs has made it clear that Blu-ray won’t be coming anytime soon to Apple products or the Apple TV, Apple might be finding this the right time for a big push of its own HD solutions.

Is is time for our little box that could to enter the spotlight? Is it time to leave the “Hobby” status behind regarding the Apple TV? Especially now that it will be the only “Apple Provided” solution for High Definition Movie content for the foreseeable future. Between the press release this morning and the email promotion I received this afternoon, I can only hope this will mean good things to come from Apple and the Apple TV.

Owning physical media is so 2004. I embrace the digital age.

Another completely pointless, speculative post. How about we actually wait for some news before we report it?

I believe they haven’t used the same fanfare (as say the introduction of the iPod) because they are not as confident in their eventual dominance in the living room. It’s a highly contested area - one that is still in the beginning stages and full of expensive options that consumers are slow to commit to. They HAVE to be there to check Microsoft and Sony, but they’re not banking on it - better to go the slow route of getting the masses to adopt their walled garden - once they have enough movies and songs that wont work with anything else, the Apple TV (or next version) will become a natural choice. Wait for the next phase - when some “killer app” such as TiVo like functionality, web browsing, or Apps/Games are added to it for when the Apple TV gets re-introduced with higher priority. As for right now, its all about gaining market share and getting people to buy apple desktops/laptops.

I’m pretty sure they were waiting until they hit the “1 million download” mark… making sure the bugs and kinks were taken care of (ie. HD downloads being overwritten, not tagged properly, etc). I still think we’ll see another small AppleTV update soon to fix a HD-tagging bug that was introduced with 8.0.1, but things are definitely a lot smoother than they were when HD TV shows was announced.
