HD Movies Now Available For Purchase!?
I’d like to give a big thanks to site visitor Ben Kittrell for pointing this one out, but folks we may be getting HD purchases after all. If you go to Iron Man in the iTunes Store you will be presented with the ability, apparently, to purchase the movie in HD. I have yet to test this out myself, but I will be, and I am no where near my Apple TV so I have yet to test there as well. If anyone has gone through with the purchase, please share with the rest of the ATVj community. But for now, woo hoo!
Update - Well it was fun while it lasted but Apple has finally pulled down their HD icon from the Iron Man page in the iTunes Store. We can only hope and wonder wether this was not a mistake but Apple testing out a new feature to come. Based on Apple’s track record of new features slipping out before they are announced, I know my hopes will stay slightly raised for HD Movie purchases.

Just noticed that the filesize does not reflect any increase which would be necessary for the higher bitrate of the HD file. Also, how would they handle iPod playback; include a SD version as well?
Regardless, if true this shows that Apple is at least beginning to test the ability to sell HD movie content which is a big step in the right direction.

I purchased this through iTunes on my computer. It’s taking awhile, but the file size is only 1.4gb, so it’s not HD. That makes sense though, try it on ATV!

I just checked my ATV… Iron Man is only listed as HD if you rent it. The button to buy the movie does not mention HD like the rent button does. I’d say this is a typo.

Nate, when I buy HD TV Shows it downloads two versions, one HD, the other SD so that you can sync to iPod, iPhone.

Russell,
Yes, I know this is how they handle TV shows, just wondering aloud if they would be able to do the same thing with movies (due to contractual terms). I guess we’ll have to wait to find out!

It’s gone…
Maybe they’re just testing the waters to see how excited people would get if such a feature should ever be released.

Okay.. I feel like a JACKASS! I’m an idiot! All along, I thought that when a movie was listed as HD, it was HD for both rental and purchase. Hence why I purchased Iron Man and The Dark Knight. Matter of fact, I even emailed iTunes stating that, when I purchased The Dark Knight, it was temporarily listed as HD, then as SD and I was unsure which I got. They replied by saying that the HD version was back up and that I could purchase it as soon as my refund was processed. They even told me to delete the old SD version I had so that I didn’t get confused with the HD purchase.
What the hell is goin’ on? What am I missing?

If Apple Store doesn’t get its act together soon, there will be (and already are, according to people I’ve talked to) sites which will sell movies in HD over the internet. That’s going to curtail sales for the Apple Store.
I own an Apple TV and I’m anxious to be able to buy HD movies from Apple.
