The More You Know…..Using Chapter Selection In Apple TV
This was something I first used successfully when I re-rented Batman Begins after it recently made its return to the Apple TV, the new Chapter selection feature which came with the 2.2 update. I tried using this feature on a few movies I own, including Slacker Uprising which is a newer title, but the option never came up.
The way you get to this feature is you tap up twice, or tap the + sign twice, on the remote while the movie is playing. This brings up an overlay with the description of the movie, and apparently on some titles, the option to Press and hold pause/play for options which leads you to the Chapter Selection screen. I assume that as newer movie titles add features such as director commentary, this will be the area where you will find it.

As more features get implemented into the Apple TV, do you think it is time for a “deluxe” remote? How many things are we going to be able to do with two buttons and four directions? I know there is an iPhone and iTouch app, but I bet most Apple TV users don’t have those.

To access the menu quicker, you can skip the pushing ‘up’ twice and just hold down play pause while a video is playing.

Joe, good point. But if the movie you rented or purchased doesn’t have these extra options available nothing happens if you hold pause/play. With the double click you are able to see if this option even exists first. At least this might be something worth doing until this option becomes more wide spread.

I think the Apple Remote wasn’t the best design and Apple acknowledged that when they stopped shipping Apple Remotes with Macs over the last year. I imagine they had received a lot of so-so customer feedback by then. Who knows, maybe the next Apple TV will breing a new Apple Remote design.
